YES or NO

My friends and I passed this quiz around about three years ago. I came across it recently and noticed I needed to update it, three of my NO's have now become YES's. I'm going to re-post it on my blog, along with the rules, so you can follow along and play with me. And NO, I'm not going to point out which three have been changed!!

Use your Mace!

A friend and I took a trip to a spice store awhile back, before making the trip I thought I should go through my two (yes two) spice cabinets and see what all I was running low on. I found a small container in my "sweet spices" labeled ground mace. It had been opened and I kind of remember buying it and using it for something, but couldn't remember what. I opened the jar and took a sniff. Oh my. I LOVE that smell!! How am I not eating this on everything??

I read the back of the jar and sure enough - you CAN eat it on everything! From chocolate and pound cakes, to fish and veggies. So I began to add it to more and more foods, sprinkled on my broccoli - good. Mixed in the doughnut batter - good. Sprinkled on chicken and in my coffee.... good!! How have I been missing this and why does it taste and smell so familiar?

Time to Google. (Yes, I am one of those people. I cannot have a conversation with an unanswered question looming. I love my iPhone, I may not know what else that actor played in - but I will find out and tell you and I have to do it NOW. I know there must be a self-help or Anon group somewhere for me - I'll Google it. Later.)

No wonder I love Mace, it is from the nutmeg fruit. Nutmeg, another favorite flavor. The nutmeg is the center seed, mace is a lace-like membrane that covers the seed. It is quite beautiful.
Please click Here to check out this wonderful website Tummy Travels.

The outside fruit is edible, the red membrane becomes Mace and the seed is the Nutmeg pod. Mace is much milder in flavor than nutmeg, not as peppery, but still has that wonderful taste and smell. I just finished baking some banana bread and the house smells wonderful! I also found out that mace is one of the ingredients in hot-dogs. Can't get more versatile than that!

So, if you've been looking to mix it up a bit in the kitchen, start with a small jar of mace and sprinkle away - please let me know if you find something it DOESN'T work with. I'm having it on my popcorn today for a quick snack. Oh, and in case you are wondering - Mace is now a brand name for pepper spray and it's made out of the capsaicin found in chili peppers, nothing to do with ground mace or nutmeg.

Catching Up on Pancakes

I've fallen a bit behind lately and am now trying to catch up! My hubby right now is working nights though, so during the day I have to keep it down.... today was "Catch Up on Pancakes " day.

We love pancakes! I love having them ready so making breakfast in the morning takes less than 1 minute. There is a bit of prepping ahead of time, but once you have a freezer full of pancakes - the family is happy!

Use whatever recipe your family loves, they all freeze well. Here a couple of quick hints though -

  • If you are going to do it - do it big! I figure if I'm going to get out the griddle, mix them up and wait for them to cook and cool - I'm going to make the most of my time. I made 4 batches today, that's about 48 pancakes.
  • If you are going to be making a big bunch, buy some powdered milk. I needed three cups of milk for my four batches. I used one packet of instant non-fat milk (out of my box of three) and instead of mixing it with 3 3/4 cups of water like it called for, I mixed it with just 3 cups. Much richer and still non-fat.
  • Use this THING my BFF got it for me for Christmas a few years ago and I LOVE it!! I use it for cupcake batter and pancakes.
  • Cool them completely! This part is important. I spread them out on cooling racks and let them cool completely before stacking them and double bagging them in freezer bags. If they aren't cool, steam will condense inside the bags and will create ice inside the bag, or cause them to stick together. Not good.
  • AJ usually eats two at a time. I spread them each with peanut butter, stack them on a plate, top with a bit of syrup and into the microwave they go for 30 seconds, the time it takes me to pour a glass of milk.

Don't forget to mix it up once in awhile to keep the kiddos from getting bored. We especially like berries, sliced apples with caramel, and sliced bananas. Try other flavors of nut butters, jam, or yogurt. Use as the base for a breakfast sandwich with a few slices of ham and a slice of cheese. Oh .... and occasionally surprise them with a few chocolate chips before heating, then top with whipped cream and sprinkles!

Week 4 - Handcarved stamps DONE!

Yea! I'm done with my February challenge. I carved a shamrock today to use for my March postcards. So, here we go with the last week of the project....

February 22nd I tried to carve a little penguin - that was a major fail! I then attempted an infinity symbol - obviously I shouldn't be wielding any kind of sharp object today. Feb 23rd all I could think to do was a pie.  Feb 24th and I can't get a song about blackbirds baked in a pie out of my head... and the 25th he got a friend (I googled a blackbird pie recipe and found a turtle pie recipe that sounded sooo yummy!). I think the turtle is one of my favorites! The 26th I was trying to use up some large scraps and out came a bone and a funky looking leaf shape. I need a bee, how can I not have a bee yet?? The 27th is a cute little bee. The 28th I did a few patterns which can be stamped over and over to make designs - see below. And then finally, day 29 and my final stamp for this project is a funky shamrock. :0)
The pattern stamps I made used multiple times :0) I like how they turned out and may try some larger ones in the future. I obviously need to be a little better about placement, but I like the look overall.

And at last, a recap of the February Hand Carved Stamp Project ....

Thanks for playing along!
