And my submission for this Round:

Chopped challenge items: textured paper, sticker, words, brads or eyelets and green.

I used yellow cardstock and distressed the edges. There is textured handmade green paper at the bottom and top, up close it looks like it was made out of grass. The three flowers on the bottom all have eyelets in them. Everything else is from a cute set of stickers I loved but had no idea what to do with. The saying says:

April in review

It's May. I did stuff in April, I really did - it just didn't make it on here. I was a bad blogger, a very bad blogger. Oh well. Life goes on... did I mention I turned 40 yesterday? Yep, life goes on and it goes by FAST!!

So here are just some pictures of the stuff I did do in April. Jewelry and calligraphy mostly.

First I'll start with the jewelry. My mom wanted one of those long blingy necklaces and sent me a bunch of stuff she found so I could put one together. I bought a few additional things and made a set of earrings to go with it.

My mom also loves flashy earrings and I try to make a pair in every color to go with whatever she's wearing, here are a few I made this month:

I also joined a couple of calligraphy exchanges with an online group. Something fun to welcome spring. I'm not very good, but I love playing. I blocked out parts of the addresses for privacy. One of the exchanges was to do a zentangle envelope and exchange (black and white doodles).

And finally, just a few odds and ends. I made some funky cupcakes for a Mother and Son cupcake rodeo, some spring postcards and a couple of cards with gift certificates for teacher appreciation week.

Hope you had fun glimpsing into my month of April!!

Stamping in Metal

I've been noticing a lot of projects lately where people are stamping into metal. Mostly words, making personalized charms, jewelry and such and of course, I wanted to play too!!

I did a search for the metal letter stamps and wow - there are a ton of fun fonts that you can get - and they are EXPENSIVE!!!! Now, I realize with it being a tool, once you buy it then you will always have it, so a little expense is justified. I started looking and trying to narrow it down to a font that I loved that would work for everything, since I could only see myself buying one. Hmmm, this is hard. So then I started looking at the stuff that you could buy to stamp onto.... metal blanks are not terribly expensive, but it's not paper and I'm sure there is a learning curve on figuring out how to do this!

I finally decided on a basic block letter font, thankfully - Harbor Freight carries them and they are extremely cheap compared to the crafty font sets I was looking at. In fact, I could buy two sizes and both would still be cheaper than what I was looking at for just one of the other sets. Now for the metal to stamp onto... I have this roll of tape that looks like metal, why can't I try that and use it for practice? And so, we're off!!

I needed something to give the metal tape some substance, I keep all those fake credit cards that come in the mail and thought that would work. However... you need to find ones without the numbers already embossed on them or work around those numbers, they will show through the tape.

I could have also used a cut up cereal box, just something a bit thicker than paper. I cut out my pieces and then wrapped them in tape. Use a bone folder (or similar) to get the tape nice and smooth in the front and around the sides. I did cover the back on the pieces that would hang off of something, otherwise if I am just going to glue it down I didn't bother.

There is definitely a learning curve to this, knowing how many times to whack it and holding it still are very important. I can't explain it, you just have to feel it. I'm sure it was much easier on these little faux blanks than on actual metal. The tape indented nicely after a couple of good whacks, although it was slippery. As you can see, spacing is a work in progress.

I used black acrylic paint to fill in the letters so that they would stand out. This is also a "ya just gotta try it" process. I redid this so many times I lost count. I would try to rub it off the top, leaving it in the dents and rubbed off everything. I finally found that my finger was the best tool, despite getting black guck under my fingernails.

Here is my finished one next to a new one. I liked how it looked leaving some of the black paint on the surface and went back and made a few extra marks in the tape as well. This piece will eventually get glued down into my journal.

Some good news! You don't need metal stamps to do this - if you want to give it a try all you need is to buy some metal tape at the hardware store.

This actually works very easily using a pen. See the little square with flowers that says Love - yep, a pen. I didn't even add any paint, it was a gel type pen and left enough ink in the grooves to highlight the marks.

The blue one on the bottom was made by using glue on the credit card in random shapes, letting it dry, and then covering it with the tape. I pressed the tape around the swirls and dots really well, then used alcohol ink to color the tape and sanded it off the top of the designs once dry.

The silver one at top was a rubber stamp, I stamped it onto the tape with ink (not stazon or anything permanent) it left just enough of an impression for me to trace. The two long ones are a mix of metal stamping and using a pen, colored with alcohol ink. I love how they almost look like copper. I covered both sides neatly and punched in the hole so I can attach a jump ring and they can hang from something.

I hope this inspired you to run out and buy some metal tape - or maybe even some metal stamps and some blanks! If you do, invite me over - I could sure use the practice!! :0)

Use your Mace!

A friend and I took a trip to a spice store awhile back, before making the trip I thought I should go through my two (yes two) spice cabinets and see what all I was running low on. I found a small container in my "sweet spices" labeled ground mace. It had been opened and I kind of remember buying it and using it for something, but couldn't remember what. I opened the jar and took a sniff. Oh my. I LOVE that smell!! How am I not eating this on everything??

I read the back of the jar and sure enough - you CAN eat it on everything! From chocolate and pound cakes, to fish and veggies. So I began to add it to more and more foods, sprinkled on my broccoli - good. Mixed in the doughnut batter - good. Sprinkled on chicken and in my coffee.... good!! How have I been missing this and why does it taste and smell so familiar?

Time to Google. (Yes, I am one of those people. I cannot have a conversation with an unanswered question looming. I love my iPhone, I may not know what else that actor played in - but I will find out and tell you and I have to do it NOW. I know there must be a self-help or Anon group somewhere for me - I'll Google it. Later.)

No wonder I love Mace, it is from the nutmeg fruit. Nutmeg, another favorite flavor. The nutmeg is the center seed, mace is a lace-like membrane that covers the seed. It is quite beautiful.
Please click Here to check out this wonderful website Tummy Travels.

The outside fruit is edible, the red membrane becomes Mace and the seed is the Nutmeg pod. Mace is much milder in flavor than nutmeg, not as peppery, but still has that wonderful taste and smell. I just finished baking some banana bread and the house smells wonderful! I also found out that mace is one of the ingredients in hot-dogs. Can't get more versatile than that!

So, if you've been looking to mix it up a bit in the kitchen, start with a small jar of mace and sprinkle away - please let me know if you find something it DOESN'T work with. I'm having it on my popcorn today for a quick snack. Oh, and in case you are wondering - Mace is now a brand name for pepper spray and it's made out of the capsaicin found in chili peppers, nothing to do with ground mace or nutmeg.

Catching Up on Pancakes

I've fallen a bit behind lately and am now trying to catch up! My hubby right now is working nights though, so during the day I have to keep it down.... today was "Catch Up on Pancakes " day.

We love pancakes! I love having them ready so making breakfast in the morning takes less than 1 minute. There is a bit of prepping ahead of time, but once you have a freezer full of pancakes - the family is happy!

Use whatever recipe your family loves, they all freeze well. Here a couple of quick hints though -

  • If you are going to do it - do it big! I figure if I'm going to get out the griddle, mix them up and wait for them to cook and cool - I'm going to make the most of my time. I made 4 batches today, that's about 48 pancakes.
  • If you are going to be making a big bunch, buy some powdered milk. I needed three cups of milk for my four batches. I used one packet of instant non-fat milk (out of my box of three) and instead of mixing it with 3 3/4 cups of water like it called for, I mixed it with just 3 cups. Much richer and still non-fat.
  • Use this THING my BFF got it for me for Christmas a few years ago and I LOVE it!! I use it for cupcake batter and pancakes.
  • Cool them completely! This part is important. I spread them out on cooling racks and let them cool completely before stacking them and double bagging them in freezer bags. If they aren't cool, steam will condense inside the bags and will create ice inside the bag, or cause them to stick together. Not good.
  • AJ usually eats two at a time. I spread them each with peanut butter, stack them on a plate, top with a bit of syrup and into the microwave they go for 30 seconds, the time it takes me to pour a glass of milk.

Don't forget to mix it up once in awhile to keep the kiddos from getting bored. We especially like berries, sliced apples with caramel, and sliced bananas. Try other flavors of nut butters, jam, or yogurt. Use as the base for a breakfast sandwich with a few slices of ham and a slice of cheese. Oh .... and occasionally surprise them with a few chocolate chips before heating, then top with whipped cream and sprinkles!

Week 4 - Handcarved stamps DONE!

Yea! I'm done with my February challenge. I carved a shamrock today to use for my March postcards. So, here we go with the last week of the project....

February 22nd I tried to carve a little penguin - that was a major fail! I then attempted an infinity symbol - obviously I shouldn't be wielding any kind of sharp object today. Feb 23rd all I could think to do was a pie.  Feb 24th and I can't get a song about blackbirds baked in a pie out of my head... and the 25th he got a friend (I googled a blackbird pie recipe and found a turtle pie recipe that sounded sooo yummy!). I think the turtle is one of my favorites! The 26th I was trying to use up some large scraps and out came a bone and a funky looking leaf shape. I need a bee, how can I not have a bee yet?? The 27th is a cute little bee. The 28th I did a few patterns which can be stamped over and over to make designs - see below. And then finally, day 29 and my final stamp for this project is a funky shamrock. :0)
The pattern stamps I made used multiple times :0) I like how they turned out and may try some larger ones in the future. I obviously need to be a little better about placement, but I like the look overall.

And at last, a recap of the February Hand Carved Stamp Project ....

Thanks for playing along!
